Real Talk – Mental Health + Celebrating Every Tiny Victory ft. Homesick

These past couple days I have been in my head a lot about what I want to put out there for my readers and people who follow me on Instagram. Many of you probably don’t know that the reason I started this blog is because I love to write. I actually major in English at San Diego State + I have always had a passion for style + beauty so I decided that a blog would be the perfect creative space for me to express myself. It’s been three months since I started Faithfulluxe and I have fallen in love with blogging and everything that comes with it. Seriously, I feel like I’ve found my calling in life and I am so happy that I took the leap and went with it. I always get loads of questions on IG about how to start a blog so if you guys would be interested in that I’d love to do a blog post all about it! Back to where I was going with this, I really miss writing + just putting my thoughts out there for the world so I thought I’d do that for you guys today.

I always want to share positivity + inspiration on my platforms, but it’s also so important for me to be real with you guys. These past couple days I haven’t been posting very much + to be simply put, I just haven’t been in the best mindset. Many of you wouldn’t know from following me that I have struggled with depression + anxiety since high school. In the past year, I have learned to handle it much better + in a healthy manner, but I will admit I still have days where I just don’t feel like my best self. For anyone who can relate, I just want to tell you that this is perfectly normal and a few bad days doesn’t equal a bad life. Trust me when I say that it does get better + you’re not alone. I do plan to share my story with you guys when I am ready but for now I will leave it at that.

With all of that being put out into the world, today I received a candle in the mail + it provoked me to write this blog post. I probably sound crazy at this point and I do realize I am a bit all over the place but I honestly just need to get my thoughts out there. So if you didn’t already know, Homesick is a brand that specializes in candles that vary from smelling like your hometown to your favorite childhood memory. They kindly sent me a Kentucky scented candle + I am obsessed. Sitting there looking at this candle that strangely enough does remind me of my hometown, I started to think about how far I’ve come. When I have days where it’s hard to get out of bed + put on a brave face, it’s really easy for me to get discouraged and question the entirety of my life. It’s hard to put into words but if I had to, I would explain to a friend that it’s like some days I get out of bed + get ready for the day with the kind of courage it takes to skydive. To some people, that may sound dramatic + a bit absurd but I think it’s so important to celebrate every tiny victory in our lives. To look yourself in the mirror and say, “Hey, you got out of bed today + just that is enough.” So while I was feeling discouraged, I looked down at this candle + I was reminded of all the tiny victories I’ve faced these past three years. I was reminded of that hopeful eighteen year old girl who dreamed of moving to California and doing exactly what I am doing right now. I guess with this post, I just wanted to remind not only myself, but you guys that if you’re ever feeling far from your best self, remember how far you’ve come. Remember to celebrate every tiny victory and lastly, remember that everyone has those days + you’re never alone.

Beach Style + Essentials

weekly style report-1-1

It’s no secret I’ve been spending way too much time in the sun this summer. It’s honestly my favorite season for style because it’s so simple + easy to incorporate the same pieces into multiple outfits. I’ve honestly been the biggest outfit repeater this summer + just re-styling my favorite pieces for different looks. I’ve realized this is honestly the way to go…it saves you money + it’s fun to see what kind of outfits you can create. One big style tip I have for you guys is that it’s the little things that count the most. I swear just by adding a killer bag or some fun-printed shoes, you can make the most average outfit look IG worthy. I’ve been loving that beach bum look lately so I wanted to show you guys how I style my favorite outfits for a day in the sun. Even if you don’t live close to a beach, I have some great tips for your average pool day or tropical vacation. Here are some of my favorite beach style tips + essentials:

IMG_4115

First of all, if you don’t already own a black high-waisted bandeau bikini set…then you need to go get one right now. I personally love high-waisted bottoms because they’re super flattering + comfortable. I got my set on Princess Polly + I will link it below.

I am also in love with mini backpacks because they’re so perfect for the beach. They hold all the essentials + aren’t too clunky. I got this gingham print one in the Brandy Melville section at PacSun but I will be sure to link a few of my faves here:

Mini Backpack Option #1 — Okay guys…I am slightly freaking out because I am obsessed with the Chloe Mini Faye Backpack + this is a serious dupe!

Mini Backpack Option #2 —  I love this! This is the perfect backpack to tie a printed bandana to!

Mini Backpack Option #3 — If you love yellow like me, then you NEED this! This is also the most similar material to the one I have!

IMG_4157

If you can’t already tell from my excessive  IG posts, I am obsessed with the straw bag trend + these leopard print shoes. They’re both so versatile + honestly add so much to any look. They both stand out enough by themselves so you can only imagine how they dress-up an outfit. I swear these shoes are perfect for everyday wear or a night out. They’ve been my go-to pair pretty much every single day.

IMG_4158

IMG_4160

Here’s a perfect example of me being the outfit repeater I am, jk. In all seriousness, it’s  so easy to just switch up an outfit with one simple piece, like these fun pants, + make it look entirely new. I am obsessed with the paper bag waisted pant trend going on this season. I love the classy look it brings to any outfit. These pants are from Threads + I am in love! They are seriously so comfy + versatile. They’re definitely going to be a staple in my closet this summer + fall.

IMG_4161.JPG

I also just  wanted to mention some beauty essentials I’ve been loving this summer thus far. I always want to show you guys brands that I love + support and just want to say that I only work with companies I truly believe in. With that being said, I am so happy to team up with Moroccan Magic to show you guys their products. They have an organic lip balm line infused 100% pure argan oil + essential oils. It’s seriously a game-changer + so moisturizing. My favorite flavors are Rose + Lavender Vanilla. Look out for a giveaway on my IG soon…but in the meantime you can find their products at your local CVS or Whole Foods.

My Go-To Hair Products

img_1436.jpg

IMG_1745

Before I get into my go-to hair products, I wanted to just give you guys a little low-down on my hair. I am naturally very blonde, however, I’ve been getting highlights since around my freshman year of high school. I’ve always preferred my hair to be super light…but, after so many years of bleaching + toning, I have realized the upkeep, and damage it does on your hair is just not worth it in the long run. I still get my hair professionally done, however, I have switched from full-highlights to balayage…which is basically another high-lighting technique where it gives a much more natural effect. I highly recommend balayage just because it’s way less upkeep + much more cost effective! As a college student, I love it because I don’t have the means or time to get my hair done very often…and I’ve noticed with balayage you can grow out your roots for much longer without it looking like a complete disaster. As for growing out long locks…this might sound gross at first, but my number one tip would be to wash your hair only a few times a week. I usually wash mine only twice a week + when I do, I make sure to style it with my favorite products so it lasts! This has helped my hair grow like crazy + it’s much healthier! Since I started growing out my hair in January, I have made an effort to find the absolute best products for my hair + I have been loving these…

img_1750-e1531784725919.jpg

For shampoo + conditioner, I have been loving the brand Kristin Ess. Since I do get my hair done, I like to use a purple shampoo when I wash my hair to reduce brassiness. I have tried tons of different brands, and I love this one! She also has a purple conditioner but to avoid purple-toned hair, I just picked up the regular signature one. I love these products because the packaging + quality is very high-end at an amazing price!

img_1751-e1531789910436.jpg

IMG_1497

Once my hair is nice + clean, I always apply my Drybar Prep Rally detangler spray. This stuff works so well + smells amazing! I love it because it keeps my hair nice + smooth, and also works as a heat protectant!

To help detangle, I am obsessed with my Wet brush! If you haven’t already tried a Wet brush, you need to go to the store right now + pick one up. I seriously don’t know what I did before I had mine!

Lastly, I am still loving my OUAI Sun of A Beach Ombré Spray. I mentioned this product in a previous post + I just wanted to give a little update. Overall, I find that it definitely gives a slight highlight effect on my ends…I would highly recommend this product to anyone who wants the balayage look, on a budget.

IMG_1752

IMG_1753.jpg

Once my hair is dry, I always try to style it right away. I prefer to curl my hair because I’ve found that it lasts longer than when I leave it untouched. I can add my favorite dry shampoo + re-style it throughout the week and it will still look good! For dry shampoo, I absolutely love Batiste! Overall, this brand is inexpensive and works perfectly.

IMG_1498

Once my hair is curled, my final + favorite step is to add my OUAI Wave Spray. I am honestly obsessed with this product. It adds texture + works as a hair spray to keep my curls in check. This stuff smells so fancy + amazing, it’s by far my favorite hair product I’ve ever tried! It’s perfect for those loose beachy curls.

Tips + Tricks: How to Make a Rental Feel More Like Home

IMG_9354

I am a firm believer that a happy environment at home can have the most positive effect on your everyday life. Similar to my own unique style and writing, I consider decorating as another form of a creative outlet for myself. As cheesy as it may sound, I think it’s so important to use your creativity in your everyday life. By surrounding myself with the things I love, I feel so inspired and motivated to be my best self. Since moving into my own place, I have been overly-obsessed with decorating and finding the perfect pieces for my little apartment, on a budget. I’ve mentioned before that as a college student, it’s so easy to feel like you’re just going through the motions and don’t have a set place you necessarily call “home.” With my own experience with renting, I’ve found that it can be difficult to make it feel like home, when you don’t exactly “own” the place. However, I’ve found that adding your own personal style, with bits + pieces of inspiration can fix any situation to feel cozier. No matter if you’re in a dorm room, apartment, or house,  I have a couple helpful tips + tricks that will go a long way into making your rental feel more like home:img_9355-e1531256243851.jpg

IMG_9503

I can’t stress this one enough…nothing makes a room feel more lonely than empty wall space. With rentals, there’s really only so much you can actually do with your space so there’s no better way to lighten up a room than with some wall art. A lot of online website are pretty pricey when it comes to simple prints, so I have a life-hack for you guys if you aren’t looking to over-spend in this area. On websites like Pinterest and Tumblr, there are tons of different prints and photos that you can print out for free…and then dress up with a pretty frame from your local thrift store. I will link some examples of prints I found online below.

Grateful Print

Do What You Love Print

X Print

Another place to find inexpensive wall art is on Amazon. I think it just might be my favorite place to find home goods because they have so much to offer and they make it so easy for you to shop. I found this wall decal on amazon for a decent price and it was so easy to stick on-to my wall.

IMG_9575.jpg

IMG_9356Now this tip might seem a bit strange at first, but trust me when I say adding different textures to a room can seriously change the vibe and make it feel extra cozy. For instance, I have been loving the whole wicker trend. You can find wicker baskets at your local Home-Goods, or online on Amazon for a decent price. Not only are they great for storage but they can quickly switch up a space and make it feel more put-together. In my apartment, I knew I wanted to add some type of marble piece but I wanted to stray away from making my living room “too” modern, so I decided to add a wicker basket on my marble coffee table and I swear it gives the perfect balance of modern, yet shabby chic.

IMG_9509

Another way to add texture is with your throw pillows + blankets. Pillows are my favorite because they are so versatile and can seriously change the feel of the entire space. I like to do this by playing around with different prints and colors, this is definitely where you can add your own personal style and creativity.

IMG_9530.jpg

img_9357-e1531258418266.jpg

IMG_9567

This is probably my favorite tip I have for you guys and it’s so simple! Adding plants + flowers is the best way to freshen up any space. I like to find a good balance between real and artificial plants throughout my apartment because I am honestly the worst at keeping plants alive. However, I do love picking up a bunch of fresh flowers during my weekly trip to Trader Joe’s…they have the best options at the lowest price! As for artificial plants, I usually go to IKEA or Target. They’re always reasonably priced and seriously change the entire vibe of a room.

img_9358.jpg

IMG_9513

Being the coffee enthusiast I am, I had to dedicate a section of my kitchen to my absolute favorite beverage. So I decided to turn a basic utility cart into a coffee cart. This obviously isn’t a necessity but I wanted to mention it because I am seriously loving mine! It’s perfect for small spaces that are lacking in counter-space.

img_9387.jpg

IMG_9573.jpg

This might sound super cliché but it’s the little things that make a difference. I am obsessed with candles and make sure to put them everywhere. It’s a quick and easy way to make a room feel cozier. I wanted to share some of my absolute favorite candles with you guys:

Life Update – Moving, Beauty + Style

IMG_9173

IMG_9177 2

IMG_9174

These past couple weeks have been hectic…in between moving, strep-throat, and lack of WiFi, I haven’t been able to post on here as much as I’d like. With that being said, I want to give you guys an update on what I’ve been up to since we last talked. So here’s what I’d like to call a little round-up of the past few weeks, and some tips + tricks I’ve learned along the way…

IMG_9180

One not so “little” update  for you guys, is that I just recently moved into my own little place and I am beyond grateful + excited about it. Ever since I moved out to California in 2015, I have had at least 5+ roommates every year and some crazy experiences to go along with it. With those experiences, I have learned a lot about life and a whole lot about myself…one of those things being, that I prefer to have my own space. I don’t know if this is normal for a twenty-one year old to say, but I’ve realized I am the type of person who loves a clean, happy environment and that’s kinda what influenced my decision to live alone. Needless to say, I am basically the definition of an introverted-extrovert and I love having my own space but I also love being an out-going twenty-one year old sometimes, so I just felt like this was the perfect way for me to find a healthy balance. I think that’s all that really matters…it can be easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing or what seems to be the “norm” in college, but it’s so important to remember to put your own happiness first.

I am absolutely obsessed with home decor + interior design so you can look forward to loads of posts in the future dedicated to that. As for now, you can enjoy this tiny glimpse of my kitchen because I am a perfectionist and I don’t want to make a post until everything is settled in…sorry I’m crazy I know.

I’d have to say one of my favorite parts about moving so far has been being able to explore my new neighborhood and all the cool eats + drinks in Pacific Beach. If you’re ever in the area I highly recommend this little Mexican restaurant, Pueblo. My boyfriend and I both agreed they had the best spicy margarita we’ve ever had and their flatbread was to die for. Not to mention, the restaurant was killer with the aesthetics.

My second favorite thing about my new place is the short, two-minute walk to the bay. It’s only been a week and I’ve already taken advantage of being so close to the beach. I’m making it my goal to go watch the sunset at least twice a week.

img_9188-e1531108997141.png

During the summer, I rarely wear makeup and with that I am usually also lacking in the skincare department. Along with the fact that I am pretty much empty on almost all of my products…I am planning on testing out tons of new stuff and I will hopefully have an updated skincare routine for you guys soon. As for now, I wanted to share some of my absolute favorite beauty products at the moment.

Since moving closer to the beach, I have been spending way too much time in the sun. For sun protection, I am still loving my Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense Sunscreen for my face/neck for everyday wear.

As for after-sun care, I have been obsessed with the most simple product that you can pretty much find anywhere, Aloe Vera. I keep mine in my fridge and use it religiously on my face/body and I swear it helps my skin so much.

Lastly, I recently picked up this frank + body lip balm from Ulta and I am obsessed. With other lip balms I’ve tried, I  would always find myself continuously re-applying the product throughout the day, but this one seems to do the trick. It lasts forever!

IMG_9286

Am i the only girl who is constantly torn between growing out my hair and suddenly chopping it all off…because I swear I have the debate in my head every single day. I have been growing my hair out since January and I’ve been trying my absolute best to keep it strong and healthy. I am planning to do a blog post all about my hair and my favorite products but for now I thought I’d share the products that have helped my hair grow like no other…

IMG_9277.jpg

Recently I’ve seen tons of beauty + health bloggers rage about collagen and the Vital Proteins brand itself, so I decided to try it out for myself. Basically, collagen is amazing for your skin, hair + nails…and overall health. I decided to go with the unflavored collagen peptides so I wouldn’t get tired of the taste. I usually just add a scoop into my water or smoothie in the morning and I have seriously noticed a difference. I started using it at the beginning of summer and my hair has grown like crazy.

The only downside of growing your hair out is taming it…so i have been LOVING this detangler spray from Drybar. It keeps my hair so smooth and also protects it from heat.

IMG_9190

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably already know that I have been LOVING the animal print trend going on right now. The whole trend makes me reminisce on that zebra print, lime green phase my pre-teen self went through. We’ve come a looong way since then and I wanted to share with you guys how I like to style animal prints in my every-day outfits.

I found this cheetah print overall dress on sale from Free People and I’m obsessed. Usually with bold prints, it’s hard to style/re-wear but this has been a staple in my closet. It’s perfect for a quick beach cover-up or if you want to dress-up an outfit. I will link everything below.

IMG_9157

I thought I’d also mention this necklace I have been loving. I’ve teamed up with Gem and Company to share with you guys my code, “JAMIELYN20” for 20% off some jewels. I will link their website here.

My Go-To Self Care Tips & Tricks

I am currently in the midst of moving, which is very exciting…don’t get me wrong about that, but going from lease to lease each summer is always stressful. It’s hard not to feel like you’re stuck in the in-between stage of your life throughout college. Of course I am constantly growing, but there is always this tiny voice in my head that seems to be telling me that I should be doing more, or better. As a college student in my twenties, it’s hard not to get discouraged or worried when thinking about what appears to be the whole grand scheme of things. Especially with the significance of social media in our society today, it’s easy to compare your progress to someone else when in reality you’re only falling a victim to some strangers perception of their perfect life on a little screen. Through my own years of self-discovery and figuring sh*t out, I’ve come to realize the truth behind the fact that everyone you see online is a real person…who deals with real issues, give or take. Everyone is dealing with their own demons, and everyone handles them in their own way. Since I got back to San Diego I’ve been in the process of finding a new place and figuring out my next big step. It’s really brought me back to think about why I started this blog and what I want to share with you guys. It might be easier to share the good stuff, but I want to be real with my readers and show you that everybody has those days. Whenever I wake up feeling like the universe is far from being a friend of mine, I have a few special things I like to do. All of these things have to do with self-care, and taking that step back to really ground myself. Sometimes self care presents itself as this glamorous thing, like bubble baths or face masks & sometimes self-care just looks like going to your favorite coffee shop and reading a good book, or making a mental list of all the things that make you feel good. I am grateful for both.

img_8074-e1530138778492.jpgThis is my first, and very most important tip because I believe that everyone should do at least one thing that makes their heart happy, each and every day. Now this might be different for absolutely everyone, whether it’s a hobby or simply just watching your favorite TV show at night…I am a firm believer in “Me Time.” Through the chaos of life, it’s easy to get caught up in making everyone else happy and I’ve learned the hard way that it’s SO vital to take time for yourself. Personally, I love to write. I’ve found that it’s my best stress-relief and always makes me feel productive.

img_8040-e1530139297765.jpgOn the same topic of making time for yourself…let’s talk about working out. I have a love/hate relationship with the gym. However, I am very aware that it has so many benefits for physical AND mental health. I’ve been doing yoga on & off for years and I love it. The best thing about it is that you can either sign up for classes at a studio or you can do it in the comfort of your own home. No matter how I’m feeling before a yoga class, I always leave in a significantly better mood.

I swear there’s a song out there that can relate to any situation or feeling you may have. Good music can seriously change the world. Whenever I am having an off-day, I always force myself to clean. I know this might sound crazy to some people, but I find it very therapeutic. I love blaring my favorite feel-good songs while I try to be productive as possible. You can listen to my feel-good playlist here.

Similar to music, there’s an endless amount of books and authors you can relate to. When you’re really busy it might seem impossible to sit down and read a book but I promise you it’s the best stress relief. Not to mention, there’s so many authors out there that have moving life-stories that will inspire you and get you out of your funk. Here are some of my favorites:

Girl Boss by Sophia Amoruso — if you’re interested in fashion or being an entrepreneur, her story is amazing!

Brain on Fire by Susannah Cahalan— I read this whole book on the airplane back to SD…needless to say it’s amazing. It’s a true story about a crazy medical mystery. The movie actually just came out on Netflix too & it’s really good!

You are a Badass by Jen Sincero— I’m not usually one for self-help books but I will say sometimes they are necessary. I enjoyed this one because not only is it an easy read, but she has a great sense of humor!img_8043-e1530147629544.jpgI must admit…I am obsessed with Pinterest! I wouldn’t usually recommend going on social media to de-stress but it’s my absolute favorite for INSPO. I swear I could spend hours just scrolling through the app…especially in the process of moving, it’s been so helpful for my apartment inspiration. Check out my Pinterest:
